Abstract:

Background: Estimating the Net reproductive number of COVID-19 virus can reveal the rate and severity of the disease transmission in the Iranian society to health researchers and practitioners. Also, it signifies the importance of the disease to the community. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the Net reproductive number of COVID-19 in Iran and its different provinces. Methods: This study was conducted on the data of COVID-19 patients in Iran from February 21 to March 8, 2020. To determine the Net reproductive number of COVID-19 in Iran, the serial interval and β value were first determined using linear regression analysis. Then, the Net reproductive number values were calculated for Iran and its different provinces. Results: The results of this study showed that the Net reproductive number of COVID-19 in Iran was 1. 31. Using the available data up to March 15, 2020, the highest Net reproductive number was in Mazandaran, Yazd, Isfahan, Qazvin, and Zanjan provinces, with values of 2. 07, 1. 86, 1. 84, and 1. 76, respectively. The Net reproductive number also showed an increasing trend in Kohgiluyeh and BoyerAhmad province. Conclusion: It seems that although the Net reproductive number of the virus had a decreasing trend in the provinces, it is still high. Therefore, sanitary measures in these provinces should be pursued more seriously. On the other hand, social distancing is a topic that should be taken into consideration, that is, social gatherings and contacts should be avoided as much as possible and strategies and facilities for this action should be developed by the government and health policymakers.

Abstract:

In this study, the life history characteristics of Trichogramma euproctidis (Girault), an established egg parasitoid species in southwestern Iran, parasitizing Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) were examined at 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, and 33 °C. The results showed that different constant temperatures significantly affected the number of parasitized eggs, development time, sex ratio, tibial length, number of parasitoids per host egg, progeny longevity, and fecundity. T. euproctidis failed to complete development at 18 °C, the lowest temperature tested. The mean developmental duration from egg to adult female decreased from 15.33 days at 21 °C to 7.25 days at 33 °C. An average of 188-degree days was required to complete development above the lower threshold temperature (7.2 °C). Survivorship was 96.20, 97.20, 98.33, 85.46, and 82.22 % at 21, 24, 27, 30, and 33 °C, respectively. The mean longevity of T. euproctidis ranged from 11.60 days at 21 °C to 4.57 days at 33 °C. Mean total progeny ranged from 19.50 / female at 33 °C to 168.70 / female at 21 °C. Data analysis demonstrated that different constant temperatures had a significant effect on the Net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rate of increase (r), finite rate of increase (λ), and generation time (T). The intrinsic rate of increase (r) improved with temperature from 0.240/day at 21°C to 0.370/day at 27 °C and then decreased at higher temperatures. Generation time decreased from 16.90 days to 7.53 days with increasing temperature. The optimal temperature for development and reproduction of T. euproctidis was 27 °C. The results of this study showed that this strain of T. euproctidis appears to have the potential to be utilized in integrated management programs targeting H. armigera.

Abstract:

Background: Infertility is one of the most devastating diagnoses for any woman or man to face, and assisted reproductive technology (ART) is a great gift of life given to these people. There are many factors influencing success rate of ART but quality of embryos is believed to improve this rate and therefore is a major challenge. This paper will focus on examining factors affecting the number of grade A embryos retrieved from infertile patients.Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study using the data of all ART patients who underwent ART in Royan institute during 9 months in 2010. As many patients had no grade A embryo, Zero Inflated Poisson (ZIP) regression model was fitted using STATA version 11 software to find the factors affecting the number of grade A embryos. Results: Maternal age (b=0.066, p value=0.015) and cleavages day (b=-0.756, p value=0.002) were significant in ZIP regression model. Conclusion: The most important factors affecting the number of grade A embryos retrieved are maternal age and cleavages day.

Abstract:

Background: We aimed to determine the generation time, the best model for estimating reproduction number (R), and to estimate the basic reproduction number (R0) and effective reproduction number (Rt) for COVID-19 in Iran. Methods: We used the daily incidence cases of COVID-19, hospitalized due to a probable diagnosis of COVID-19 from 19 February 2020 to 17 November 2020 in Iran. Four models, including maximum likelihood (ML), exponential growth (EG), time-dependent (TD), sequential Bayesian (SB) were evaluated. The weekly reproduction number with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated. Results: TD model shows the best fit compared to other models for estimating reproduction number in Iran. The R0 in Iran in the first week of the epidemic, leading up to 21 February 2020 was 7. 19, 95% CI: 5. 56, 9. 00. The lowest value for the Rt was equal to 0. 77 between 3 to 10 March 2020 and 4 to 11 December 2020. From 11 June 2020 up to13 August 2020, the Rt was more than one but after then to 24 September 2021 was less than one. Conclusion: TD model was the best fit for estimating the R in Iran. The worst situation of the epidemic in Iran was related to the weeks leading up to 26 February 2020 and 28 October 2020, and better status was related to the weeks leading up to 10 March 2020 and 11 December 2020.

Abstract:

Background: In recent years, the high likelihood of the implantation of transferred embryos has led to an increase in the number of multiple pregnancies and consequently an increased risk of complications in fetuses and mothers. Since the aim of infertility treatment is the birth of a healthy child while preserving the mother’s health, therefore, attempts should be made to avoid multiple pregnancies as much as possible besides maintaining the women’s chance of pregnancy by transferring an appropriate number of embryos. Methods: The population under study consisted of specialists (gynecologists and embryologists) who worked in ART clinics across the country and had attended an infertility congress in Tehran in 2008. The devised questionnaire enquired about the infertility specialists’ attitude towards the appropriate number of transferable embryos. The questions were designed on a Likert scale of strongly agree, agree, indifferent, disagree and strongly disagree. The scores of the questionnaire ranged from 0-60 which were later scaled up to 100 for ease of data analysis. Accordingly, scores below 50 were considered as "negative", 50-75 "moderate" and greater than 75 as "positive".Results: Overall, 9.9% of the specialists gained a score less than 50 (negative view), 67.3% between 50-75 (moderate) and 22.8% greater than 75 (positive view). Conclusion: The infertility specialists in Iran are relatively reluctant to transfer a high number of embryos for infertility treatments.

Abstract:

Background: Effective reproductive number (Re) is an index which considers the proportion of susceptible people in a community. There are different methods for calculation of basic reproductive number. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reproductive number using data from H1N1 patients in Fars Province, southern Iran. Methods: According to the data obtained, 233 cases were confirmed between July 15th and December 3rd, 2009.Two waves were observed during this period with a peak in October 21st in Fars Province. Results: In the first wave, the highest amount of R0 was 3.22 and the lowest amount was 2.12 and in the second wave, the highest and lowest amounts of R0 were 3.42 and 2.42, respectively. Conclusion: Effective reproductive number could not be more than 1.54. Thus in order to maintain R0 below 1, using preventive measures like vaccination, only 70% of population should be immune. As 54.9% of Fars population were immune against H1N1 if only 15.1 of them take part in vaccination program, the disease will not reach an epidemic level.

Abstract:

Background: Crocin, a carotenoid isolated from Crocus sativus L. (saffron), is a pharmacologically active component of saffron. Nicotine consumption can decrease fertility in males through induction of oxidative stress and DNA damage. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of crocin on reproductive parameter damages in male mice exposed to nicotine.Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, we divided 48 mice into 8 groups (n=6 per group): control (normal saline), nicotine (2.5 mg/kg), crocin (12.5, 25 and 50 mg/kg) and crocin (12.5, 25 and 50 mg/kg)+nicotine (2.5 mg/kg). Mice received once daily intraperitoneal injections of crocin, nicotine and crocin+nicotine for 4 weeks. Sperm parameters (count, motility, and viability), testis weight, seminiferous tube diameters, testosterone, and serum nitric oxide levels were analyzed and compared. Results: Nicotine administration significantly decreased testosterone level; sperm count, viability, and motility; testis weight and seminiferous tubule diameters compared to the control group (P<0.05). However, increasing the dose of crocin in the crocin and crocin+nicotine groups significantly boosted sperm motility and viability; seminiferous tubule diameters; testis weight; and testosterone levels in all groups compared to the nicotine group (P<0.05).Conclusion: Crocin improves nicotine-induced adverse effects on reproductive parameters in male mice.
